Abu Dhabi has achieved an unprecedented milestone in marine resource management, with its sustainable fishing index reaching 100 percent by the end of 2025, according to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. This remarkable achievement represents a dramatic transformation from just 8 percent in 2018, positioning the emirate among global leaders in sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation.
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi announced the historic accomplishment, which reflects successful restoration of the emirate’s marine resources through strict scientific policies, effective habitat protection, and development of a sustainable system that enhances fish stock abundance. This rapid progress demonstrates the strength of the emirate’s environmental management model and its capability to rebuild fish stocks according to the highest international standards.
Leadership Support Behind Sustainable Fishing Success
Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, emphasized that this achievement reflects strong support from UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The initiative comes under the directives of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Presidential Court Minister.
According to Sheikh Hamdan, the accomplishment represents the fruit of a comprehensive research and development project supported by the Presidential Court. The project involved developing advanced scientific methodologies for monitoring fish stocks, analyzing marine ecosystems, and leveraging big data and modern technologies to support policies and legislation.
Strategic Approach to Marine Resource Management
The accelerated rise in the sustainable fishing index embodies the success of the strategic approach adopted by the emirate in managing its marine resources. Sheikh Hamdan stated that what has been achieved in recent years represents the result of a vision based on knowledge, innovation, and regulation of marine practices that maintains sea balance and ensures sustainability for future generations.
Mohamed bin Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, indicated that the significant leap in the sustainable fishing index comes within an integrated system of legislation, policies, and scientific procedures. These measures contributed to rebuilding fish stocks within a short timeframe compared to global standards, reflecting precise planning and strong implementation.
Scientific Innovation Drives Marine Conservation
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, described reaching 100 percent on the sustainable fishing index as a “historic transformation and global model in marine wealth management.” She confirmed that this achievement resulted from a unique national partnership bringing together the agency with the National Guard, fishermen’s association, and community.
Additionally, Dr. Al Dhaheri emphasized that the emirate has moved from a protection phase to a prosperity phase, supported by trust from leadership and commitment from partners. She noted that the role extends beyond protecting the sea to rebuilding it faster and stronger, marking just the beginning of a longer journey based on new sustainable fisheries policy and advanced technologies including artificial intelligence and the research vessel “Jaywun.”
Comprehensive Habitat Protection Programs
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi continues enhancing protection of productive marine habitats through an integrated system of projects targeting increased sea productivity and environmental balance restoration. These initiatives include rehabilitating natural habitats, restoring ecosystems, implementing extensive biodiversity enhancement programs, developing Abu Dhabi coral gardens, and deploying 40,000 artificial reefs to create fish-attracting environments.
Meanwhile, the agency strengthens its regulatory framework by relying on artificial intelligence and smart systems to monitor fishing effort and environmental data. These capabilities are supported by the research vessel “Jaywun,” which provides accurate scientific data supporting decision-making processes.
Fish Hatchery Program Supports Stock Recovery
The Abu Al Abyad Island management continues implementing an advanced program for releasing fish fingerlings produced in specialized ponds, contributing directly to marine wealth rebuilding. The program compensates for losses resulting from natural pressures and fishing by releasing fingerlings raised in healthy, monitored environments, enhancing their ability to adapt, grow, and reproduce in the sea.
However, authorities have not specified exact timelines for expanding these marine conservation initiatives. The emirate’s continued focus on data-driven policies, partnerships, and advanced technologies is expected to further cement Abu Dhabi’s position as a global model in sustainable natural resource management.
