A French parliamentarian has praised the United Arab Emirates for its pioneering model in women’s empowerment and parliamentary participation during a major international forum. Amelia Lakrafi, a member of the French Parliament representing French citizens in Africa and the Middle East and Secretary-General of the Francophone Parliamentary Assembly, commended the UAE’s achievements in enhancing women’s role in decision-making processes and legislative work.

The remarks came on the sidelines of the second session of the Women Parliamentarians Forum of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, which launched today in the UAE. The Federal National Council is organizing the event, which brings together female legislators from across the Mediterranean region to discuss women’s empowerment and parliamentary cooperation.

Women’s Empowerment as a Development Priority

According to Lakrafi, women’s empowerment represents a fundamental pillar in all countries’ efforts to achieve sustainable development and economic progress. She noted that the UAE has succeeded in achieving remarkable accomplishments in this file, establishing clear legislation and demonstrating strong political will to support women’s presence in various sectors.

The parliamentarian emphasized that the UAE places significant focus on inclusion issues, particularly regarding women’s integration into professional and political spheres. She highlighted that the country continuously works to provide women with opportunities to achieve excellence and accomplishment across different fields, from economic institutions to international organizations and bodies.

Legislative Framework Supporting Women in the UAE

Lakrafi pointed to the UAE’s comprehensive legislative framework designed to enhance women’s participation in decision-making processes. She stated that the country possesses clear regulations and strong determination to support women’s growing role in various sectors, reflecting a deep belief in their central role in achieving comprehensive development.

Additionally, the French official noted that the UAE supports women’s presence in international organizations and bodies, recognizing their pivotal contribution to building the future. This approach aligns with global efforts to increase female representation in positions of influence and leadership across governmental and non-governmental institutions.

Parliamentary Forums as Tools for International Cooperation

The parliamentarian described women’s parliamentary forums as important instruments for strengthening international cooperation and exchanging best legislative practices. She affirmed that joint parliamentary work contributes to supporting policies that benefit women and addressing shared challenges facing female legislators worldwide.

Meanwhile, Lakrafi expressed her pride in participating in the forum, which she said provided an ideal platform for exchanging views and experiences. The gathering enables participants to learn about efforts being made in inclusion issues and to develop collaborative strategies for advancing women’s rights through legislative channels.

UAE’s Role in Hosting International Dialogue

In contrast to some regions where women’s parliamentary participation remains limited, the UAE has positioned itself as a regional leader in promoting gender equality in governance. Lakrafi praised the UAE’s role in hosting international events that enhance dialogue and understanding among nations on critical issues affecting women.

However, the parliamentarian stressed the importance of continuing these constructive dialogues beyond individual events. She noted that sustained engagement is essential for consolidating women’s position as essential partners in the development journey and shaping future policies that affect societies across the Mediterranean region and beyond.

The forum’s outcomes and recommendations are expected to be announced following the conclusion of the sessions, though specific timelines for implementation of any joint initiatives have not yet been confirmed by organizers.
