A new documentary about Melania Trump exceeded box office expectations in North America over the weekend, generating seven million dollars in revenue. The film “Melania,” produced by Amazon MGM, secured third place at the box office during its opening weekend, marking a notable performance for a documentary release.

The Melania Trump documentary explores details about the First Lady’s life during the twenty days leading up to her husband’s inauguration as President of the United States in 2025. Despite its strong showing for a documentary film, industry analysts have expressed concerns about its financial viability given the production’s substantial budget.

Box Office Performance and Budget Concerns

According to analyst David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research, the documentary’s opening weekend performance presents a mixed picture. While the seven million dollar debut represents an excellent start for a documentary, Gross noted that such figures would be considered troubling for any other type of film.

The concern stems primarily from the film’s high production cost of 75 million dollars. Additionally, the analyst pointed to limited opportunities for generating significant international revenue, which could make it challenging for the documentary to recoup its investment.

Weekend Box Office Rankings

“Send Help” from Twentieth Century took the top spot at the box office, earning 20 million dollars, according to Exhibitor Relations on Sunday. The film’s strong performance helped it maintain dominance over a competitive weekend lineup.

Meanwhile, the science fiction film “Iron Lung” claimed second place with revenues reaching 18 million dollars. The post-apocalyptic thriller, adapted from a video game, was written, directed, and financed by YouTube star Mark Fischbach, known as Markiplier.

Competition from Animated and Action Films

Disney’s Oscar-nominated animated film “Zootopia 2” secured fourth place, generating 5.8 million dollars in the United States and Canada. The sequel continued to demonstrate strong staying power in theaters despite competition from new releases.

In contrast, the action thriller “Shelter,” starring Jason Statham, rounded out the top five with earnings of 5.5 million dollars during its first weekend in theaters. The film’s debut placed it just behind the Melania documentary in the competitive rankings.

Documentary Market Dynamics

The performance of the Melania Trump documentary highlights both the opportunities and challenges facing high-budget documentary films in today’s market. However, documentaries typically face different financial expectations compared to narrative features, with lower production costs and targeted distribution strategies.

The 75 million dollar budget for this particular documentary represents an unusually high investment for the genre. This elevated spending likely reflects the film’s high-profile subject matter and production values intended to appeal to theatrical audiences rather than traditional documentary viewers.

Industry observers will continue monitoring the documentary’s performance in coming weeks to determine whether it can build on its opening momentum or if the budget concerns will prove justified. The film’s ability to sustain interest beyond its initial release will be crucial for its overall financial success.
