Manchester City midfielder Rodri has expressed strong frustration over refereeing decisions following his team’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday. The Spanish international criticized what he perceives as biased officiating and demanded that referees remain neutral in their decisions, particularly regarding controversial VAR calls that affected the match outcome.
The match saw Manchester City take a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half through goals from Ryan Shaqiri and Antonio Semenyo. However, Tottenham mounted a comeback with two goals from Dominic Solanke, denying City the opportunity to close the gap with league leaders Arsenal to just four points.
Controversial VAR Decision Sparks Rodri Criticism
The primary source of Rodri’s anger centered on Solanke’s first goal in the 53rd minute. According to the Manchester City midfielder, the Tottenham striker appeared to kick City defender Marc Guehi’s leg from behind before scoring. Despite a VAR review of the incident, officials determined the challenge was a natural part of play and did not warrant a foul.
Speaking to Australian broadcaster Stan Sport, Rodri highlighted a pattern of unfavorable VAR decisions affecting Manchester City throughout January. The team had previously faced controversial calls in matches against Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers during the month.
Manchester City Star Questions Referee Neutrality
“I know we have won many titles and people don’t want us to win again, but the referee must be neutral, and frankly what is happening is not fair,” Rodri stated. The Spanish midfielder’s comments reflect growing frustration within the Manchester City camp over what they perceive as inconsistent officiating standards.
Additionally, Rodri emphasized that the hard work put in by the team is being undermined by small details that make significant differences in a league decided by fine margins. He described the foul on Guehi as completely clear, insisting that Solanke’s kick to the defender’s leg directly led to the goal.
Premier League Match Centre Defends VAR Call
In contrast to Rodri’s assessment, the Premier League Match Centre issued a statement defending the decision. According to the official explanation, VAR reviewed the incident and supported the on-field referee’s decision to allow the goal. Officials concluded that Solanke played the ball and did not commit a foul against Marc Guehi, officially confirming the goal for the Tottenham striker.
However, the Manchester City midfielder made it clear that while he generally prefers not to discuss referees and greatly respects their work, the repetition of questionable calls over three consecutive matches has left him feeling frustrated. The accumulation of these incidents has raised concerns within the club about the consistency of Premier League officiating.
Meanwhile, the draw leaves Manchester City trailing Arsenal by a significant margin in the title race. The dropped points represent a missed opportunity for Pep Guardiola’s side to apply pressure on the league leaders during a crucial phase of the season.
The controversy surrounding VAR decisions continues to dominate discussions in the Premier League, with Rodri’s comments adding to ongoing debates about the technology’s implementation. The Spanish international’s public criticism of officiating standards reflects broader concerns among players and managers about consistency in decision-making.
The Premier League has not indicated whether any further review of the refereeing decisions from the Manchester City versus Tottenham match will take place. As the season progresses, the impact of these controversial calls on the final league standings remains to be seen, particularly for City’s title aspirations.
