Image Nation Abu Dhabi has significantly expanded opportunities for Emirati filmmakers and content creators throughout 2025, cementing its role as a cornerstone of UAE cinema development. The Abu Dhabi-based production company has focused on empowering local talent across film, television, and emerging storytelling formats, according to recent reports from the organization.
The company’s 2025 program prioritized placing Emiratis in influential creative and leadership positions, ensuring authentic Emirati stories reach global audiences with professional quality. From feature films and television programs to training initiatives and experimental formats, Image Nation Abu Dhabi has demonstrated commitment to supporting UAE talent both on-screen and behind the camera.
Emirati Filmmakers Lead Major Productions
Talal Al Asmani, Head of Local Content at Image Nation Abu Dhabi, stated that supporting Emirati and regional talent represents a foundational responsibility rather than a temporary initiative. He emphasized that every project, from development through production, creates genuine pathways enabling these talents to lead, innovate, and build sustainable careers.
The horror film “Hoba,” directed by Emirati filmmaker Majid Al Ansari, emerged as a standout achievement this year. The production marked the first Arabic-language Emirati work within the partnership between Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Spooky Pictures, representing a significant milestone for regionally-rooted cinema.
Global Recognition for UAE Cinema
Following its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, where it won Best Film in the horror competition, “Hoba” continued its success across international platforms. The film was officially selected for the 58th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival and screened at the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival, positioning it among the most anticipated works in global cinema.
Additionally, “Hoba” was shown in Saudi Arabia and captured two awards at the 2025 Gulf Film Festival in Oman, including Best Feature Film and Best Actress for Budoor Mohammed. The actress made her feature film debut in a leading role, performing alongside Jasem Al Kharaz and other regional talent.
Emirati Talent Development Programs Expand
Emirati development executive Fatima Al Dhaheri played a central role throughout the film’s development process, serving as cultural consultant and creative partner. Her contributions encompassed script development, character building, and creative decisions, ensuring the story maintained cultural sensitivity and authenticity while preserving the director’s overall vision.
Meanwhile, Emirati casting director Alawiya Thani, collaborating with Omar Al Bayati, led the casting process that balanced regional diversity with strong Emirati representation. Their work resulted in an emotionally layered ensemble that brought depth to the narrative.
Training the Next Generation
Beyond feature filmmaking, Image Nation Abu Dhabi continued supporting emerging talent through the Screen Life accelerator program, developed in partnership with director Timur Bekmambetov. The initiative provided structured mentorship and practical training for aspiring filmmakers, including Emirati participants whose projects advanced notably in screenplay development.
However, the company’s impact extended beyond narrative cinema. The second season of reality television program “Million Dollar Listing: UAE,” produced with Starzplay, created additional opportunities for regional creators. Emirati documentary executive Aziza Al Tamimi supported the production team throughout filming, contributing to research, coordination, and workflow management while ensuring cultural sensitivity.
Innovation in UAE Storytelling Formats
In contrast to traditional production methods, Image Nation Abu Dhabi showcased new storytelling forms with “A Story Called Zain,” the region’s first AI-powered film produced via social media platforms. The locally developed project invited audiences to participate directly in shaping the narrative, with contributing viewers credited in the final production.
Internationally, the partnership with Spooky Pictures enabled Emirati productions to reach major global platforms. “The Plague” became the first Abu Dhabi co-produced feature to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, marking a prominent milestone for Emirati production on one of cinema’s most prestigious stages.
The collaboration also supported professional development for Emirati film executives, including Alia Al Qamzi, a development executive at Image Nation Abu Dhabi who contributed to multiple Spooky Pictures projects, including the upcoming film “Minns.” Furthermore, the company supports “Hokum,” starring Adam Scott and directed by Damian McCarthy, scheduled for release later this year with scenes filmed in Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Desert.
Community Engagement Initiatives
Image Nation Abu Dhabi demonstrated clear commitment to community engagement through partnerships with strategic collaborators across the UAE. The company organized curated community screenings and educational activities at locations including Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi, Masafi Cultural Center in Fujairah in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, and Funoon Bil Arabi with Miral on Yas Island.
Ben Ross, Chief Executive Officer of Image Nation Abu Dhabi, stated that 2025 represents a pivotal milestone in supporting the UAE’s creative soft power on the global stage. He noted that expanding the ambition and cultural impact of projects and international partnerships enables stories and talent to reach worldwide audiences while contributing to shaping perceptions through culture, values, and ideas.
The company has invited Emirati writers, filmmakers, producers, and creators to participate in upcoming development programs, productions, and initiatives. With its expanding portfolio and diverse formats, Image Nation Abu Dhabi continues prioritizing efforts to empower Emirati talent in storytelling, building sustainable career pathways, and shaping the future of the film and television industry in the United Arab Emirates.
