Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched a comprehensive training program in collaboration with the C Institute to empower its workforce with sustainability skills and knowledge. The initiative, titled “Empowering DEWA Employees to Ensure a Sustainable Future,” aims to enhance employee awareness of international best practices in sustainability, circular economy, facility management, and carbon neutrality strategies within utility organizations. The two-day intensive program reflects Dubai’s commitment to achieving its long-term environmental goals.
According to His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, the training program aligns with Dubai’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050. The authority is providing employees with innovative tools, programs, and initiatives to strengthen their knowledge in climate action and support sustainable economic, environmental, and social development.
Sustainability Training Supports Carbon Neutrality Goals
The training program featured awareness sessions and interactive workshops designed to reinforce employee roles in meeting global sustainability standards. Participants explored emerging trends shaping the future of utility management, positioning DEWA employees as key pillars in achieving the organization’s vision to become a globally leading sustainable and innovative institution.
Al Tayer emphasized that DEWA employees form the main foundation for realizing the authority’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The program also supports DEWA’s circular economy strategy by encouraging more efficient and sustainable use of resources across all operations.
Comprehensive Curriculum Covers Key Environmental Topics
The intensive two-day program covered multiple critical areas of sustainable utility management. Employees learned about the latest developments in renewable energy source assessment and methods for integrating these sources into the existing power grid. Additionally, the curriculum included circular economy practices that ensure optimal resource utilization and minimize waste.
Participants also received training on energy efficiency techniques and carbon removal technologies designed to reduce carbon emissions. The program highlighted the role of digital technologies in accelerating sustainability initiatives, providing employees with practical skills applicable to their daily operations.
Building Capacity for Environmental Leadership
The collaboration with the C Institute brings international expertise to DEWA’s workforce development efforts. The partnership ensures that employees receive training based on globally recognized standards and cutting-edge sustainability practices. This knowledge transfer is essential for maintaining DEWA’s position as a regional leader in sustainable utility management.
Furthermore, the program supports Dubai’s broader environmental ambitions beyond just the utility sector. By equipping its workforce with advanced sustainability skills, DEWA is creating a model that other government entities and private organizations can follow in their own carbon neutrality journeys.
Practical Applications and Future Impact
The training emphasized practical applications that employees can implement immediately in their respective departments. Participants explored real-world case studies demonstrating successful integration of renewable energy sources and circular economy principles in utility operations. These examples provided tangible frameworks for translating sustainability concepts into operational improvements.
Meanwhile, the focus on digital technologies reflects DEWA’s recognition that innovation and sustainability are interconnected. Employees learned how smart systems, data analytics, and automation can simultaneously improve service delivery while reducing environmental impact.
In contrast to traditional training approaches, this program adopted an interactive format encouraging employee participation and knowledge exchange. The workshop sessions allowed participants to share insights from their own experiences and collaborate on solutions to sustainability challenges specific to Dubai’s context.
DEWA has not announced specific timelines for follow-up training sessions or measurement metrics to assess the program’s impact on organizational sustainability performance. However, the initiative represents a significant investment in building internal capacity to meet the emirate’s 2050 carbon neutrality target and positions the workforce to adapt to evolving environmental regulations and industry standards.
