Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Abu Dhabi to discuss expanding UAE-Germany cooperation across multiple sectors. The meeting, held at Al Shati Palace, focused on strengthening bilateral relations in energy, development, innovation, and advanced technology as both nations seek to deepen their strategic partnership.

During the official visit, the two leaders reviewed various tracks of joint cooperation and explored ways to enhance collaboration that serves mutual interests and supports the developmental priorities of both countries. The discussions also covered regional and international issues of common concern, with both sides exchanging views on matters affecting global stability.

Strategic Partnership Between UAE and Germany Reaches New Heights

President Sheikh Mohamed welcomed the German Chancellor and emphasized that the UAE-Germany cooperation is built on solid foundations and active partnerships. According to official statements, he noted that the relationship spans critical sectors including energy, development, innovation, and advanced technology. The UAE leader expressed the nation’s commitment to nurturing these relations and elevating them to broader horizons for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.

Additionally, both leaders underscored the necessity of working together to promote regional and global stability. They agreed on the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomatic means to serve regional and international peace interests, reflecting a shared commitment to multilateral approaches in addressing contemporary challenges.

Energy and Economic Agreements Signed

The meeting witnessed the signing and exchange of several memoranda of understanding aimed at expanding cooperation between the two nations. Among the most significant was an agreement between ADNOC and German energy company RWE covering gas and liquefied natural gas cooperation. Meanwhile, Masdar and RWE signed a separate memorandum focusing on energy storage battery systems, demonstrating the growing renewable energy collaboration.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and CEO of ADNOC, exchanged these agreements with Dr. Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE. The energy sector memoranda reflect Germany’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy sources and the UAE’s position as a reliable energy partner in an evolving global market.

In contrast to the energy focus, other agreements targeted industrial cooperation. Emirati companies Fertiglobe and Ta’ziz signed a memorandum with German chemical giant Covestro for collaboration in the chemical industries sector. Dr. Al Jaber exchanged this agreement with Dr. Markus Steilemann, Covestro’s CEO, highlighting the diversification of bilateral economic ties beyond traditional energy partnerships.

Sports and Cultural Cooperation Expanded

However, the agreements weren’t limited to industrial sectors. The UAE Pro League and the German Bundesliga signed a cooperation memorandum, exchanged by Abdullah Nasser Al Junaibi, President of the UAE Pro League, and Peer Naubert, CEO of Bundesliga International. This partnership represents growing cultural and sports ties that complement economic cooperation between the two nations.

President Sheikh Mohamed hosted a banquet in honor of the German Chancellor and his accompanying delegation. Upon the Chancellor’s arrival at Al Shati Palace, official reception ceremonies were conducted with the UAE President accompanying him. The German leader exchanged greetings with senior officials, including sheikhs, ministers, and high-ranking state officials.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs, along with several ministers and senior state officials. The President also met with the economic delegation accompanying the Chancellor, wishing them success during their visit to the UAE.

The bilateral cooperation framework established during this visit is expected to guide future engagements between the UAE and Germany, though specific timelines for implementing the signed agreements have not been disclosed. Both nations are anticipated to continue high-level consultations to advance these partnerships across energy, technology, and cultural sectors.
