Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti admitted his team “made the wrong decisions while Atalanta made the right ones” following a disappointing elimination from the Coppa Italia. The Italian giants suffered a crushing 0-3 defeat to Atalanta in the quarterfinals, ending their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the domestic cup competition.
The match took place in Bergamo, where Juventus had entered in excellent form and confident of maintaining their recent dominance over Atalanta in the Coppa Italia. The Turin-based club had previously won the trophy at Atalanta’s expense in both the 2021 and 2024 finals, according to the manager’s post-match comments.
Controversial Penalty Shifts Momentum in Coppa Italia Clash
A disputed penalty kick proved to be the turning point in the Coppa Italia encounter. Video Assistant Referee technology detected a handball against Gleison Bremer, who was attempting to clear a cross from Ederson. The incident was so subtle that even Atalanta players had not initially noticed it.
Gianluca Scamacca converted the penalty to give the hosts the lead. Subsequently, Atalanta’s substitutes made a decisive impact, with Kamal Suleiman and Mario Pasalic adding the second and third goals. Meanwhile, Juventus’ own substitutions, including Jeremy Boga and Emil Holm, failed to produce the desired effect.
Spalletti Reflects on Critical Moments
Speaking to Sport Mediaset after the match, Spalletti acknowledged Atalanta’s superiority in key moments. “They were better than us in the crucial moments of the match. When you comment on a 0-3 defeat, you don’t find much to say,” the veteran manager stated. He congratulated Atalanta and their coach, describing them as a well-structured team that plays excellent football.
The Juventus boss emphasized that his team made poor decisions when the competition intensified. “There are moments when the ball moves randomly and depends heavily on statistics, but when the competition gets tough, you must make the right decisions quickly and accurately,” Spalletti explained. He stressed that in those moments, Juventus made wrong choices while Atalanta made correct ones.
Missing Sharpness in Decisive Moments
Spalletti identified a recurring problem affecting his squad throughout the current season. “We seem to lack that ferocity and mental focus in crucial moments. This happens a lot this season,” the manager emphasized. Despite having a deep squad, Juventus’ substitutes could not elevate performance levels in the second half, unlike their opponents.
Additionally, the manager discussed broader team dynamics and training methods. “Raising the level also depends on how the team trains as a whole. We have some weaknesses, as many teams do, but I feel we are one team,” Spalletti said. He pointed out that the scoreline did not reflect the number of opportunities Juventus created during the match.
However, Spalletti expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s approach in the final minutes. “What I didn’t like is that in the last minutes we got distracted and tried to find an individual breakthrough, which led to us losing organization and cohesion,” he noted. When asked directly about the penalty decision, the manager deflected with a smile, stating he was interested in other matters.
In contrast to focusing on refereeing decisions, Spalletti outlined his priority moving forward. “The most difficult task for me is to convince the players of what actually happened in the match, not what the result shows. They need to see the reality of their performance,” the manager concluded. The team will now focus entirely on their Serie A campaign and remaining competitive objectives for the season.
